The Review by Nathan Sanders, Stringband.com Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's........"PLOP"....eww in my eye....it was a bird! HA!! Made you look. You thought I was going to say "Flyin' Fiddler" didn't you? Well you will not find the Fiddler in the sky but you might see him on the back of a motorcycle cruisin' down the highway with a fiddle strapped to his back. If you do see him on a bike, with a bunch of other motorcycle enthusiasts following, hop aboard because they are probably headed for a rollicking good time at some really tasty eating establishment. But anyway, back to the topic of music and the beautiful, lilting sounds of Wayne "The Flyin' Fiddler" Cantwell and his old-time fiddle on his new CD simply called Just Me and a Fiddle. And, true to the title, it is just Wayne and his fiddle, nothing else. Plus you get "more for your money." The CD consists of 22 tracks, but most of the tracks are actually medleys of Celtic, old-timey, Gospel, and toe-tappin' tunes which will no doubt bring a smile to your face. There are even a few original tunes from Wayne on the CD. One in particular, "The Ghosts of Ft. Washita" really captures the spirit of a bygone era, and was inspired by a ghost tale while Wayne was visiting the Oklahoma landmark. Just Me and a Fiddle is an all-instrumental collection which provides a really nice backdrop to your evening at home, whether you are working on something or simply relaxing by the fire. Put it in the CD player and dance away your troubles or let the kids work off some energy. The possibilities are endless. Maybe you are a musician who is looking for somebody to jam with. Grab your guitar, or mandolin, or banjo, or tuba and play along with Wayne. In fact, that is not a bad idea for banjo players. Now you can jam in the privacy of your own home and not have to put up with the sneering glances of fellow musicians. Which reminds me, how many banjo players does it take............oops sorry.....nearly lapsed into a banjo joke. Seriously, though, Wayne has provided a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn some great fiddle tunes as well. So keep an ear and eye open in your neck of the woods for the Flyin' Fiddler.
